TIPS TO MAKING YOUR WEDDING DAY PHOTOS BETTER!

IT'S ALL ABOUT THE LIGHT!

Most photographers will tell you, "It's all about the light".  One of the most important aspects that goes into photography is lighting.  Make sure to choose a Wedding day venue that has good lighting or can provide you with ambient lighting if it is not already present.

Make sure to take the lighting of your preparation rooms, Wedding day venue and reception into consideration.

Lighting can effect your photos in a major way!  If you have a dark room for your reception you may end up with over exposed faces and dark or black backgrounds.

If you do not have the option of choosing a venue with good lighting make sure you are aware of how your photos may turn out so that you are not disappointed when you review your final photos.

SCHEDULING

Photography captures moments in time.  One of the most important and most expensive parts of any Wedding is the photographic documentation of the Wedding day.  Therefore, it is very important to be sure that you schedule time for Wedding day "formals" (portraits).  Make sure that your photographer and wedding planner are aware of how important photos are to you and that a proper schedule is made to allow plenty of time for photo taking.

Gathering Family

Chances are, you do not know your Wedding Photographer on a personal basis.  Chances are, your Wedding Photographer has never met your Grandparents or your Aunt Betsty.  So, it is highly important that you have a plan of action for getting VIP's into your Wedding "formals" (portraits).

A good plan of action is to talk with family and friends that you know you want in your "formals" (portraits) before the Wedding.  Let them know when and where they will be needed and what you expect from them.  Also, by speaking with them you can get an idea of what types of photos they are going to want and want to be in.

Make sure that your photographer knows who the VIP's are.  It is ALWAYS a good idea to have a designated family member or friend to help the photographer in gathering VIP's for your "formals" (portraits).  It will provide a more even flow of events.

PLAN FOR THE "FORMALS" (PORTRAITS)

Scheduling portrait sessions, or “formals,” is also a fact of life for wedding photography.  After all, there are shots of certain people that every bride and groom wants to guarantee for posterity. Again, advanced planning is paramount to taking care of these in an efficient manner.

Make sure to talk to your family before the wedding. Find out what shots your Parents and other family members are counting on having, and assume they are getting.

Make sure you choose a photo package that provides each family member with the types and sizes of photos they are expecting to receive.

If family members are responsible for purchasing their own photos, make sure to share the photo pricing list with them prior to the Wedding so that there are no misunderstandings.

Make sure to discuss with your photographer what types of "formals" (portraits) you want, well in advance to the Wedding day.

JUST THE BRIDE & GROOM (AND THE PHOTOGRAPHER)

There are two people out of all the people that go into a Wedding, that are the most important.  The Bride & the Groom.  Although, it is also important to have photos with family and friends, the photos of the Bride & Groom are the main focus for most couples and families.  So why not consider a private moment between the Bride & the Groom with the photographer?  It will give the Bride & Groom a break from the caoticness of the Wedding day and a chance for them to relax and enjoy the moment as a couple, with the photographers watchful eye to caputure the moment!

WEDDING PHOTO CHECKLIST

Depending on the style of photos you wish to have you may or may not want to fill out a Wedding Photo Checklist.  I do provide them to be sure that certain "formals" (portraits) are taken.  But, this can also take away from the natural flow and feeling of the moments.  Make sure to make your photographer aware of the style of photos you are looking for.  You may like the formal approach, where everyone is lined up by height, Bride & Groom in the middle.  Or you may prefer to have the photographer choose a more creative line up.  Make sure to discuss your preferences with your photographer well in advance to your Wedding day.

FEELING COMFORTABLE

It is important to feel comfortable with your photographer.  If you are not, it will show in your photos.  One way of feeling more comfortable with your photographer is to have several conversations and meetings before your Wedding day.  You may also consider doing an Engagement Photo Session/Shoot with your photographer.  This will give you a good understanding of how your photographer works so that you know what to expect on your Wedding day.
